What should I do after installing the prosthesis?

After the prosthetic leg is installed, in addition to the above-mentioned training, the main training is to manipulate the prosthesis in accordance with the functional design of the prosthesis.

In recent years, for young patients who had lower limb amputations not due to vascular disease, it is recommended to install temporary prostheses immediately after surgery. The method is to use plaster as a hard bandage on the postoperative stump, and then install a rod-type temporary prosthesis outside the reinforced plaster. You can start some weight-bearing exercises in the walker or balance bar 1-2 days after the operation, and the weight should be gradually increased. You can first use the prosthesis to try to step on the scale to experience the physical sensation of different weights. According to this feeling, you can grasp the weight and check it frequently.

Most of the load is carried by the upper limbs through crutches, balance bars or walkers. The residual limb load shall not exceed 5kg on the first 1-2 days after operation, 10kg before wound healing, and 15kg within 4 weeks after operation. The first practice is once a day for 1-5 minutes, then gradually increase the number of training and training time. Walk on the balance bar or walker first, then walk with crutches, change the cast every 10 days or so, and you can assemble a permanent prosthesis about 1 month after the operation.
